Interview with Clothes Doctor Founder Lulu O'Connor
What inspired you to found Clothes Doctor, and how did your journey lead to championing the importance of garment care?
I started Clothes Doctor because I couldn't find quality repair services for my favorite coat. It was a simple problem that sparked a bigger idea. My mum always believed in 'make-do-and-mend,' and that philosophy shaped me. Clothes Doctor is all about extending the life of your wardrobe with love and care.
Why is it so important to care properly for your delicates—especially luxurious fabrics like silk, lace, and embroidery?
Delicates are fragile and deserve special attention. Proper care means they last longer and look beautiful. For me, it's about respecting the craftsmanship behind each piece.
How does thoughtful lingerie care support longevity and preserve the beauty of each piece?
Taking care of your lingerie keeps it beautiful and strong. Gentle washing and proper storage go a long way.
What’s the best way to wash silk lingerie at home without damaging the fabric?
Hand-wash it with lukewarm water and a gentle detergent. Never wring it out, just lay it flat to dry. It's simple but so effective.
For those nervous about hand-washing silk and lace delicates, what are your essential tips?
Use a gentle detergent.
Cold water is your friend.
Swirl gently, don’t scrub.
Lay flat to dry.
Which detergent do you recommend for delicate fabrics like silk, lace, and embroidery - and why?
Our Wash for Silk and Delicates. It's gentle and keeps fabrics soft and beautiful.
Are there any ingredients we should avoid when washing luxury lingerie?
Yes! Avoid enzymes, bleach, and fabric softeners. They can ruin delicate fabrics. Stick to gentle, natural products.
How often should you wash silk and lace lingerie to keep it in perfect condition?
For bras, I recommend washing every two to three wears to keep them fresh and well-shaped. Of course, some people may differ, but I find this routine works best.. Underwear, on the other hand, should be washed after every wear, it's just better for hygiene and fabric care.
Can over-washing reduce the lifespan of these delicate fabrics?
Definitely. Too much washing weakens the fibers. Less is more.
What’s the biggest mistake people make when washing their delicates?
Throwing them in the washing machine without protection. If you must, always use a mesh bag.
Are there any red flags—such as fabric softeners or wringing—that should always be avoided?
Yes, never use fabric softeners or wring out your delicates. Always press them gently between towels.
Can you share your top three tips for making your intimates last longer?
Rotate them, don’t wear the same one every day.
Store them carefully.
Check for loose threads and fix them early.
From washing to storage, what’s the secret to preserving delicate fabrics and intricate detailing?
Gentle washing, proper storage, and a bit of love. Fasten hooks and use mesh bags to avoid snags.
Clothes Doctor products are known for their beautiful scents—which floral fragrances do you love most for spring/summer garment care?
I love our Basil & Mandarin Leaf detergent. It’s fresh and perfect for spring. It makes laundry feel luxurious.
