There is something transformative about knowing how to find your perfect fitting bra. It changes the way your clothes sit, the way your posture lifts, and often, the way you feel within yourself.
After more than twenty five years of designing luxury lingerie and fitting women of all shapes and sizes, I can tell you this with certainty: most women are wearing the wrong bra size without even realising it.
Our bodies evolve constantly through hormones, lifestyle, motherhood, stress, exercise, and age. Yet many of us continue wearing the same bra size for years, adjusting straps tighter and tighter, believing discomfort is simply part of wearing lingerie.
It should never be.
A perfectly fitting bra should feel supportive, elegant, and almost effortless. It should move with your body, enhance your natural shape, and leave you feeling comfortable from morning to evening.
So where do you begin?
Before investing in new luxury lingerie, start with the bras already sitting in your drawer. Your current fit tells a story, and often reveals exactly what your body needs.
Your straps should sit comfortably on the shoulders without slipping or digging in.
You should be able to slide one finger underneath with gentle tension. If the straps are falling down regularly, this often indicates the band is too large rather than the straps themselves being the issue.
Deep grooves in the shoulders are another sign your bra is not supporting you correctly. The majority of support should come from the band, not the straps.
The cups should sit smoothly against the breast with no gaping, wrinkling, or overflow.
If you notice spillage at the neckline, sides, or underarm area, your cup size is likely too small. Equally, if the fabric wrinkles or collapses, the cup may be too large or the shape unsuitable for your breast shape.
One of the biggest misconceptions in bra fitting is that cup size alone determines fit. In reality, shape is equally important. Balcony bras, plunge bras, side support bras, and soft cups all create different silhouettes and support structures.
At Fleur of England, we design each silhouette individually because true luxury lies in how lingerie feels on the body, not simply how it looks.
The underwire should fully encase the breast tissue and sit flat against the ribcage.
The centre front of the bra, known as the gore, should lie flush against the sternum. If it lifts away from the body, this usually means the cup is too small.
Underwires should never sit on breast tissue. If they dig into the sides or front of the breast, your size or shape is incorrect.
Beautiful lingerie should never feel painful.
The band is the foundation of your bra fit and should sit straight and level across the back.
If it rides upwards, the band is too loose. If it feels painfully restrictive, it may be too tight or the cup too small, forcing the band to compensate.
A properly fitting band should feel firm and supportive on the loosest hook when new. As the fabric naturally softens over time, you can tighten the hooks to maintain support and longevity.
This is one of the most important secrets professional bra fitters know.
You likely need to increase your cup size.
You may need a smaller band and a larger cup size.
You may need to increase the band size and reduce the cup size.
You may need to reduce your cup size or explore a different bra shape.
One of the most misunderstood aspects of bra fitting is sister sizing.
Cup size changes relative to the band size. For example, a 34C and a 32D hold a similar cup volume, but fit differently around the body.
This is why professional fittings are so valuable. Finding your perfect fit is not simply about measurements. It is about understanding breast shape, tissue distribution, proportions, and how different fabrics and constructions behave on the body.
Luxury lingerie fitting is an art form.
A well fitting bra is not simply about aesthetics. It impacts comfort, posture, confidence, and the way you carry yourself.
When lingerie fits beautifully, you stop adjusting it throughout the day. You feel supported without restriction. Elegant without discomfort.
At Fleur of England, every piece is designed with this philosophy in mind. We believe lingerie should feel sensual and empowering whilst offering exceptional fit and craftsmanship.
Because true luxury begins with how something makes you feel.
If you cannot remember the last time you were professionally fitted, this is your sign.
Your body may have changed more than you realise.
And sometimes, the smallest shift in fit can completely transform the way you feel in your lingerie.
