Demystifying Bras: A Guide to Fit, Comfort & Confidence
As the founder and designer of Fleur of England, I have spent over 30 years dedicated to creating luxury lingerie that empowers women to feel their most confident, beautiful, and comfortable. But no matter how exquisite a piece may be, its magic is lost without the right fit.
Finding the perfect bra can be challenging—especially if you're unsure about what to look for. But don't worry! I’m here to guide you through the process of demystifying bras and how they should support and enhance your body. At Fleur of England, we’re not just passionate about beauty; we’re committed to designing lingerie that fits impeccably and feels incredible. We also offer VIP virtual fit appointments to help you find the perfect bra from the comfort of your home.
A well-fitted bra is more than just a foundation piece—it’s an essential tool for your daily comfort, confidence, and posture. Wearing a bra that fits properly means that it moves with you, supports you throughout the day, and complements your clothes in the best possible way.
If your bra pinches, rides up or leaves you constantly adjusting, it’s a sign that you need to find something better. When you invest in luxury lingerie, you deserve more than beauty—you deserve a bra that feels like it was made just for you.
Designing a great bra requires an understanding of both engineering and anatomy. Each element of the bra has a specific function, and getting these details right is key to ensuring that the final piece offers both elegance and support.
One of the most important elements of any bra is the material it’s made from. At Fleur of England, we use only the finest materials, such as French lace, silk, and Italian tulle, to create pieces that are as luxurious as they are functional. These fabrics are carefully selected to provide the right amount of stretch and support, working in harmony with the other components to deliver a perfect fit.
If you prefer wired bras, it’s essential that the wire provides enough support without being uncomfortable. A poorly constructed wire can dig into your skin, while a high-quality wire, like the ones we use, will feel like a natural extension of the bra. For those who prefer no-wires, we also design bras with reinforced structures that offer similar support, thanks to design techniques and strategic fabric layering.
The centre panel of your bra (also known as the gore or centre front) is a small but crucial part of the design. It helps anchor the cups to your body, ensuring that the bra sits properly and provides support where you need it most. If this panel is too wide or the wrong shape, the cups won’t sit correctly, leading to discomfort and a poor fit. A well-designed centre front sits snugly against the skin, enhancing both comfort and silhouette.
One of the most common misconceptions about bras is that a design that works for one size will work just as well for all sizes. In reality, larger busts require different mechanics. That’s why, at Fleur of England, we pay close attention to how each bra is structured, particularly for larger sizes available in our curve sizes. We use wider straps, u–back construction, reinforced side panels, and additional layers of fabric to ensure that our bras provide the necessary support without sacrificing style.
Strap placement can make or break a bra. If the straps are too far apart, they’ll slip off your shoulders. Too close together, and they can dig into sensitive areas. Our designs ensure that the straps are positioned perfectly to offer maximum comfort while enhancing the bra’s fit and overall look. We always use silk-encased elastic, which doesn’t dig in and is supportive but soft against your skin.
The cradle is the fabric part that goes around the body and starts from the centre front and is attached to your wire. The cradle goes around the body and is usually rigid (not stretchy) as working with the wire, is the foundation of your fit. The cradle has a seam that then leads into your wing which is stretchy and goes around your back into a fastening.
There’s no single formula for the perfect bra—each body is unique, and so are its needs. However, one of the key elements of a great bra is ensuring that the weight of the bust is distributed evenly around the body. The back band, not the straps, should do most of the work. If the straps are bearing the majority of the weight, it’s a sign that the bra is ill-fitting.
At Fleur of England, we design every bra with this in mind. Whether it’s a lace balconette or an embroidered plunge bra, we ensure that the back band provides the right amount of support while allowing the straps to simply enhance comfort.

That’s why we offer VIP virtual fit appointments, designed to help you find the best lingerie for your unique body from the comfort of your own home.
