Celebrating International Women's Day with Emily McGuirk
How did Sarah Jepson come to found Six Degrees, and what led to you becoming the Co-founder?
Sarah founded Six Degrees after years of attending networking events where she never truly felt like she belonged. She wanted a space where women felt welcomed, seen, and heard—so she created it. When I first joined as a member, networking terrified me. I was just starting my business, Small Steps Big Vision, and I worried I wouldn’t find my tribe. But from my very first event, I felt at home.
Sarah invited me to speak about my journey from self-loathing to self-worth, and the response was overwhelming. That led to me creating Mindful Mondays, a free newsletter that’s still loved today. Over time, I became more involved, and 18 months ago, I officially joined as Co-founder. I couldn’t be prouder to build this community with Sarah—proof of what happens when you surround yourself with the right people.
What sets Six Degrees apart from other female-focused networks?
Every female network has its niche, and ours is holistic support—personally and professionally. Our community attracts generous, heart-led, collaborative women who genuinely want to see others succeed. When you're surrounded by that kind of energy, anything is possible, and you never feel alone.
The Power of Female-Only Communities
Why are female-only spaces still crucial today?
Women instinctively understand the need for these spaces. We still see women being silenced, underrepresented, and excluded from key conversations—especially in areas like wealth and investment. Instead of waiting for the world to catch up, we’re taking action, equipping our members with the tools, knowledge, and connections they need to thrive.
What challenges do women face in networking, and how does Six Degrees help?
Traditional networking can feel transactional and cliquey. At Six Degrees, we lead with connection first—business naturally follows. We ensure every event has a warm welcome, someone to introduce you, and a culture where you never have to awkwardly insert yourself into a conversation. We make networking feel effortless.
International Women’s Day 2025 – 'Accelerate Action'
What does this year’s IWD theme, 'Accelerate Action,' mean to you and Six Degrees?
We refuse to wait five generations for gender parity. Accelerate Action means putting the right knowledge, support, and networks into women’s hands—now. Every time a woman learns something valuable at one of our events, she shares it with her circle, creating a ripple effect of progress.
What urgent steps are needed to advance gender equality?
Money. We’re still talking about the gender pay gap in 2025 and only 1.7% of investment funding goes to women, and many don’t even know where to start with seeking or becoming investors. The issue isn’t just lack of opportunity—it’s lack of access and information. We’re committed to changing that by sharing our experiences, creating visibility, and holding institutions accountable.
Empowerment Through Self-Expression & Confidence
How do personal style and self-expression—including lingerie—impact confidence?
For me, it’s everything. Wearing well-fitted, beautifully designed lingerie makes me feel unstoppable. We all know how difficult it is to concentrate when wearing ill fitting underwear! But it’s not just about comfort—it’s about carrying myself with confidence, standing taller, and owning my space. Bright colors and bold outfits also spark connection—I find that people are more likely to approach me at events when I wear something vibrant!
How does confidence in what you wear translate into other areas of life?
I see clothes as armor. When I step into a space where I feel out of my depth, dressing in a way that makes me feel strong helps me become that confident version of myself. Just like an actor in costume, I use style to step into my best self.
Taking Action in Everyday Life
What advice would you give to women struggling with self-doubt?
Start by noticing how you talk to yourself. If you kept a journal of your inner monologue for 24 hours, you’d likely be shocked by how harsh you are. Awareness is the first step. Then, work on self-acceptance—owning every part of yourself with kindness. Confidence isn’t about never feeling doubt; it’s about not letting it control you.
What are small yet impactful ways women can accelerate action for gender equality?
-
Share knowledge—what helps you will help others.
-
Celebrate and amplify other women’s successes.
-
Call out misogyny when you see it.
-
Support organisations that actively uplift women, whether by sharing their work, donating, or volunteering.
Looking Ahead
What’s next for Six Degrees?
Our biggest challenge (and opportunity) this year is securing investment. We’ve already broken the odds by securing one incredible female investor, and we’re looking for more like-minded people who believe in our mission to make every woman feel seen, heard, and empowered.
What advice would you give to women looking to join or start a network like Six Degrees?
Try different communities. Some will feel like home; others won’t. You won’t know until you experience them. Six Degrees offers a 30-day free trial so women can explore our live sessions, networking events, and masterclasses to see if it’s the right fit. Find the space where you feel supported—and don’t settle for less.
